COVID-19 Update: Still Open

Cutting Hedge continues to operate although at a much reduced capacity, following the introduction of Government guidance on managing coronavirus. Cutting Hedge takes the Government's guidance on CORVID-19 very seriously; therefore Cutting Hedge will only consider and undertake work where the Governments guidance can be met.

Please don't be offended if I choose not to undertake some work, or when on site practice 'social distancing'. I do this for my own and your safety. If I choose and you accept work to be undertaken on your property you agree to follow the Governments guidance on coronavirus, and accept any associated risks relating to CORVID-19.

Gardeners Guide

October 2020

Winter feels like it has finally arrived, temperatures have dropped and the plants and lawns aren't growing as quickly. Even thought it is heading into winter there is a lot you can do in the month of October to both tidy up the garden and prepare it for net spring and summer.  Here are a few suggestions:

  • Trim conifer hedges and apply mulch around the base.

  • Weed flower beds.

  • Plant spring bulbs.

  • Trim box and other formal hedges lightly.

  • Protect plants from slugs and snails.

  • Check greenhouses for pests.

  • Get in your final grass cuts of the season. Ensure it is a fine day and the ground isn't too wet. Don't cut the grass too short to avoid the ground becoming muddy when the real winter arrives.

  • Make sure you ventilate your greenhouse on warmer days.

  • Keep the plants in the greenhouse watered.

  • Start to compost plants that have completed their growing season, such as tomatoes and sweet peas.

  • Think about grabbing yourself a bargain at the local garden centre, so look out for end of season sales.

You can get more helpful hints and tips as well as inspiration at the Royal Horticultural Society website.
